Who Made The Cut At Birds In Art 2012? (We Have The List)

Juried Show At Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum Is Best Globally In Avian Art

Written by Todd Wilkinson (Authors Bio)

Every year about this time, it is a phenomenon.  No sooner had the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum announced who had been juried into the 2012 Birds In Art exhibition than the chatter began.  Soundless as it spread virally across Facebook, a long list of nature artists were sharing their enthusiasm.  For those who had tried for years and finally made it in, the reaction was pure euphoria.  For others who have been fortunate to become Birds In Art regulars, joy combined with a sense of relief.

As Kathy Foley, director of the Woodson makes clear, there are no automatic acceptances into Birds In Art, no free passes, not even if your name is Robert Bateman or Lars Jonsson. Having been a juror twice before, I can tell you that the overall quality of submissions is always quite impressive and entries come from all over the world.  Many artists consider their pilgrimage to Wausau, Wisconsin—home of the Woodson—to be the highlight of their year.

Foley provides an insider's look at what goes into the selection process in a column that is highly recommended.  Read it by clicking here.  As she notes, this year close to 600 artists collectively entered nearly 1,000 works.

Few nature art shows even come close to the professionalism and quality of Birds In Art.  In addition to putting on an incredible weekend of comraderie for painters and sculptors who scale the hurdle, Birds In Art stages a traveling show that allows viewers across the country to see some of the best avian art in the world.

On behalf of Wildlife Art Journal.com, congratulations to those artists who will be flocking to Wausau in a couple of months.  Also enjoy a sneak preview of some of the works in Birds in Art 2012, below.

Hi, My name is Camille Engel... My painting, "Strike A Pose" (a witty depiction of a raven with rook playing cards) was accepted into "Birds In Art 2012". This is my first time so, articles like yours are very helpful. I specialize in oil paintings of backyard birds and am excited to discover "Birds In Art!" Thank you for your very informative article! All the best, Camille
