As a marriage of natural history, fine art execution, compelling composition, and timing, the complete volume—just 120 sets are now known to exist—is one of wildlife art's greatest masterpieces.
For the record, artist-naturalist Alexander Wilson was the first to compile an encyclopedic overview of birds in the New World. But it certainly doesn't detract from the quality and scope of Audubon's ambitious achievement.
