Rockman Is Not Only Fearless, He Paints Nature As You've Never Seen It, Yet
Alexis Rockman is one of the most daring nature artists of the 21st century. He fits into the category of ultimate contemporary wildlife artist and in a way relishes it. The Manhattanite has a sensitivity for natural history—he was a favorite, after all, of the late evolutionary biologist Stephen J. Gould—that is complemented by command of paint, eco-prescience and a sometimes riotous sense of humor. A fellow American with similar instincts is painter Carel Pieter Brest van Kempen who has an exhibition at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell, New Jersey up through spring 2012.
