'Primary' by Andrew Denman

Painter Andrew Denman has come a long way as a contemporary wildlife artist.  And he's arrived in the present by being daring, by refusing to be a mere documentarian of animals in their environment. For that reason, he is among a group of Young Turks bringing a fresh contemporary edge to wildlife art.

Can Denman paint an elk, bison or pronghorn in a traditional manner?  Yes, indeed he can. Majestically, in fact.  And to prove the point we've put one of Denman's majestic elk in the gallery slide show above.  Denman, however, refuses to be overtly commercial or to paint subjects the same way they've already been portrayed countless times.

In 2012, Denman hits the international stage by appearing in a two-man exhibition with Guy Combes called "Old World-New World" at the Nature In Art Museum in Gloucester, United Kingdom.  (To learn more about the exhibition, click here ).


Born in 1978, Denman has seen his work exhibited at a number of prominent venues including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's annual Birds In Art, the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Western Visions show, the Society of Animal Artists' marquee event, 'Art and the Animal' and the Bennington Center for the Arts' 'Art and the Animal Kingdom'.  Not long ago, a critic said this of Denman's work:  “In the increasingly crowded field of wildlife artists, Andrew Denman stands out for his distinctive look in addition to his...

'Andrew Deman is featured in a major two-man exhibition in 2012.  He and Guy Combes are appearing at the Nature In Art Museum in an event titled "Old World-New World'.  It opens the day after the Olympic Games in London ends.  Denman was among the first artists WAJ featured in its popular segment Five Questions/Five Artworks which we've updated. As part of Five Questions/Five Artworks, a new artist is featured every few months.  It's all about artists interviewing other artists.
