In his laid back, matter of fact mannerism, Mark Susinno will tell you, as a self-proclamation, that he is a "fishing fanatic." Nothing new there: Most anglers, be they trout or salmon flyfishers; bone, tarpon, snook, or permit  casters; weekend warriors going after pike, walleye, and bass; or those dropping lines into deep saltwater for big fish, possess a certain unapologetic rabid quality.

The fact that Susinno justifies his indulgence as part of his "research" for painting fishscapes puts him in rare company. And the fact that he holds a fine art degree from Pratt Institute (alma mater of the late wildlife artist Bob Kuhn, actor Robert Redford, heavy metal musician Rob Zombie, Max Weber, the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and a cast of others), puts him in even more rarefied air. Pratt's motto by the way: Be True To Your Work And Your Work Will Be True To You.

Moreover,  the fact that Susinno is a member of American Mensa, the society for people with genius level IQs means he isn't your typical bubba fish slayer (for the record, Susinno not only practices non-lethal catch and release of most fish he hooks but he champions it whenever he can in his work).

Susinno is, in fact,  fiercely serious in approaching his fish paintings as fine art and few would argue. He is considered a master. He says his subjects are worthy no less so than still lifes, portraits of people, and landscapes,...

Editor's Comments:

'Fishscapes:  Think of what you would give right now to be on the water. Some artists are described as painters' painters.  Mark Susinno is known as the angler's painter and he is one of the best in the world.  When he isn't stalking fish with a rod in his hand, he's carrying a sketchbook, camera, and pisctatorial fied guides to study his colorful muses.  For millions around the world who love to fish from North America to Patagonia and New Zealand to the brooks of Sweden, Russia and Scotland, you'll enjoy WAJ's interview with Susinno and seeing a wide selection of his paintings.
