There’s a queasy tension in the air still chilling the art market. Who can ignore it?
That’s why so many artists and collectors are focusing this year on the annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction July 25, 2009 at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada. The largest of its kind—it specializes primarily in American Western, wildlife and sporting art—Coeur d’Alene notched a record $36,966,425 in one-day sales a year ago, which was almost $2 million more than the record setting total in 2007.

Anxiety abounds globally, no question. One need only look across the Atlantic. Early in July 2009, the business news purveyor Bloomberg reported that “the total volume of sales at London’s June auctions of Impressionist and contemporary works declined 70 percent on last year as auction houses cut jobs and guarantees to sellers to adjust to the financial slump.”
Specifically, Bloomberg reported in a widely circulated story that three major houses, Sotheby’s, Christie’s International and Phillips de Pury netted 165.9 million pounds ($269.4 million) at their annual beginning of summer events this year, down from a record 558.8 million pounds in 2008....
