Becoming only the second woman ever to win the Prix de West Invitational's top prize, artist Terri Kelly Moyers earned high praise from judges for her stunning figurative oil painting, "La Luz de Fe".
Prix de West, now in its 39th year, is hosted by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. It is considered the premiere art competition in the American West and a formal precursor to summer. The 2012 iteration includes 351 works by 114 painters and sculptors. The exhibition will remain on public display through Aug. 5, 2012.
Moyers, 58, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is only the second woman to claim the Prix de West Purchase Prize and it comes 34 years after painter Betinna Steinke made history in 1978. In addition to Moyers' triumph, acclaim was accorded again to George Carlson.
For the third year in a row, the sculptor-turned-painter from Harrison, Idaho took home the Robert Lougheed Memorial Award. The honor, awarded by peers, is given to the artist who is deemed to submit the strongest collection of three of more works.
