James Stroud paints black zebra stripes with the same flourish of surface texture Vincent van Gogh brought to his sunflowers.  And, in laying down thick-hued splotches of paint with a palette knife, be it to accentuate an elephant’s trunk or rhinoceros horn, his technique—which is to say, Stroud’s way of seeing and sculpting paint —also summons thoughts of abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning.  The artist doesn't compare himself to those European masters, but others do.

Stroud is practically unknown to collectors in North America and the UK.  This South African, classically trained as a studio painter, wields a contemporary flair in his portrayal of African animals and the landscapes they haunt.  What sets him apart and catches the eye is mesmerizing surface topography. Editor's Comments:

'If it's true that some of the best, resonant art has been produced during times of tumult and uncertainty, then South African painter James Stroud has a gold mine of material to work with.  In his first major one-man show in the U.S., Stroud in March 2012 will unveil two dozen new works at Call of Africa Native Visions Galleries in Naples and Ft. Lauderdale Florida.  Considered one of the most exciting young contemporary wildlife artists in the world, Stroud's technique has earned comparisons to Vincent van Gogh and Willem de Kooning.  In addition to his art, he's a thinker with a raw edge and he's hardly shy about proclaiming the value of conservation in a world where nature is falling apart.
